As a vessel approaches, an importer may receive an Arrival Notice, followed later by a Delivery Order (D/O) or release confirmation. They concern the same shipment but do not serve the same purpose.

An Arrival Notice helps the importer prepare. A Delivery Order or release confirmation forms part of the process for taking delivery under the applicable conditions. An Arrival Notice alone does not establish that a container is ready for pickup.

What does an Arrival Notice do?

It commonly provides vessel/voyage, discharge port, ETA, bill of lading or container references and contact instructions. Importers use it to review documents, import formalities, charges, trucking and warehouse plans. The ETA remains an estimate and should be followed by actual-status updates.

What does a Delivery Order or release confirmation do?

It relates to releasing cargo to the party entitled to receive it under the carrier/agent and terminal process. Maersk explains how customers can download a Delivery Order or container release confirmation from the shipment's import-document section. Official guidance.

Maersk also states that import-container release is subject to local customs rules, payment of charges and surrender of relevant documents. Container-release guidance. This is one carrier's general guidance; actual requirements depend on the carrier, port, bill-of-lading type and shipment.

Seven checks before dispatching a truck

  • Do the B/L, container, seal and consignee details match the file?
  • Has the ETA become an actual arrival/discharge milestone?
  • Is the D/O or release confirmation issued and valid?
  • What import and customs actions remain pending?
  • Are payable charges confirmed and updated?
  • Where and when is pickup allowed, and which PIN or document is required?
  • Where and by when must the empty be returned, and can the warehouse receive the cargo?

Do not dispatch a truck from ETA or Arrival Notice alone. Obtain a clear confirmation of container availability/release, pickup location, validity and driver requirements.

Please confirm shipment [B/L/container]: latest Arrival Notice, actual arrival/discharge status, D/O or release status, pending customs/documents/charges, pickup location and hours, required PIN or documents, and empty-return location/deadline. Please state when the shipment is ready for truck dispatch and the escalation contact if status changes.

SeaAir Global can coordinate destination tasks within the agreed service scope. Send a request with the B/L, container, discharge port, document status and delivery address.
